Why Go
You know summer is around the corner when fresh strawberries start appearing en masse in the grocery store in the late spring. And since California produces about 90% of the country’s strawberries, we have the unique opportunity to make a weekend getaway centered around picking our own berries right from the farm. Strolling between rows of berry plants, picking strawberries, is loads of fun whether you’re a family with kids, an adventurous couple, or traveling solo.
While there are many farms that offer u-pick strawberries, this trip focuses on Swanton Berry Farm in the tiny coastal town of Davenport. Not only are the strawberries sweet and delicious, but you can feel good about supporting a family-owned farm that was the first certified organic strawberry farm in the state. Plus, it’s such a uniquely California experience to be picking strawberries across the street from the Pacific Ocean! Once you have filled your baskets, you’ll definitely want to purchase their homemade jams and strawberry shortcakes.
Despite being only 2.8 square miles with a population of less than 500 people, Davenport offers enough beyond the berry farm to fill out your weekend. Spend some time at Shark Fin Beach, with its dramatic shark fin-shaped rock just offshore, rock arch tunnels, and tide pools. Hike around and take photos, or just lay out a towel on the sand and relax. The Davenport Roadhouse offers a full restaurant and bar with live music. And the Whale City Bakery is your stop for breakfast and baked goods.
This sweet getaway, with its small town charm and stunning views, is a uniquely California experience.
