Why Go
Do you remember, as a kid, being fascinated by fireflies? Bioluminescence is the light produced by living organisms, and you can experience the magic again in an entirely new way by taking a trip to Tomales Bay.
In California coastal waters, tiny single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates produce most bioluminescence. When disturbed by waves, wind, or the gentle splash of your hand or paddle, they emit a blue glow.
Tomales Bay is one of the best places in the country to experience a bioluminescent light show, but like most natural phenomena, the conditions need to be just right. The season runs from late summer to early fall, and you need a dark night with no moon for the best viewing conditions. But when it happens, it’s a memorable experience that people describe as blue sparks or, more poetically, fairy dust.
The best way to see the show is to book a nighttime kayak tour. Blue Waters Kayaking is one of the most well-known operators. You can also raise the adventure level by booking an overnight kayak camping trip.
If the thought of being out on the water at night makes you nervous, you can try viewing from the shore, but this is less reliable. Heart’s Desire Beach is a good place to start.
During the day, Tomales Bay offers many fun things to do. You can hang out at the beach, hike, or dine on fresh oysters. Nearby Point Reyes National Seashore is a popular destination with many opportunities to view wildlife.
Suggested Itinerary
Drive up on Friday night to enjoy the entire day on Saturday. Nick’s Cove is an iconic place to stay, and Blue Water Kayaks launches its tour nearby. If there are no more rooms at Nick’s, try the Lodge at Marconi. Get breakfast at the famous Marshall Store before hiking or heading to the beach. At night, after sunset, view the bioluminescence. Enjoy a lovely brunch before driving home on Sunday.
